Take action

Take action to support the call for the Canadian government to issue Temporary Resident Permits (TRPs) to allow family members of refugees to live in Canada while they wait for their permanent residence applications to be processed!

Here are some suggestions of actions - we encourage you also to be creative in your advocacy!

For organizations

  • Write a letter to the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (and copy your Member of Parliament if you are a local organization) - you can use this template letter
  • Organize a meeting with a Member of Parliament, including someone who is experiencing family separation.
  • Bring the issue to networks in which you participate to encourage other organizations to support the recommendation and brainstorm creative ways to strengthen advocacy
  • Ask for the support of your provincial government - write a letter or raise it in a meeting. Highlight that provinces bear the substantial costs of family reunification after long separation
  • Reach out to ask for support from potential allies – organizations in the health, education, social justice and anti-racism sectors, faith communities, children’s rights groups and others that should be concerned about delayed family reunification.
  • Share information about the call on your website, through social media, with staff and Board, with members and donors…

For individuals

  • Write or even better speak to your local Member of Parliament. Affected individuals can use this template letter. A visit with one or more affected persons and a supporter or NGO representative would be ideal!
  • Write a letter to the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship and copy your Member of Parliament
  • Post on social media about the issue and what you are doing. Encourage others to take action.
  • Contact organizations you know and ask them to support the call for Temporary Resident Permits for family members of refugees.
